The New Forest National Park covers 220 sq. mi. with ancient woodlands and lowland heaths where you can find free roaming ponies, cattle, donkeys and deer. In Autumn pigs are released to feast on acorns (poisonous for animals). This annual pannage is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years.
The park also covers coastlines with wild-life rich salt marshes, where river meets sea, and mudflats.

The Rufus House is situated in the heart of the New Forest National Park, ideal TOURING BASE to explore the New Forest and surrounding areas of natural beauty.
Walking, cycling, bird watching, horse riding, sailing, golf, archery, kayaking & canoeing. Equestrian centres, spa and swimming pools are all short distance from The Rufus House.

The winter months are a great time of year to attend Retreat to experience tranquility and clear energy in the forest.
Being with nature looking up the sky, you might notice merlin, peregrine falcon and short eared owl making regular appearances on the heathland just in front of The Rufus House.
Early morning walk to Bolton’s Bench or top of the hill to take in the magnificent site of the sun rising and moon set.
If the sky is dark and clear, one evening, we recommend a short walk in front of the Rufus House to the top of the hill where you can enjoy 360 degree views. Why? The New Forest has some of the UK’s darkest skies in the relatively light-polluted south-east.
